Our specialised Aviation course allows students to learn the theory required for a private pilot’s licence, including the flying operations and theoretical understanding required by the Civil Aviation Safety Authority’s (CASA) ‘Basic Aeronautical Knowledge’ syllabus.

Topics include aircraft engines and systems, navigation, meteorology, flight planning, aerodynamics, performance and operation, human factors, aviation law and regulations, and theory and practices of flight.

Students benefit from using our flight trainers, computer-aided design software and extensive practical activities. Our Synthetic Flight Trainer (flight simulator) allows students to experience the sensations of take-off and landing, manoeuvring situations and turbulence.

Students completing Stage 2 Aviation studies may be eligible for credit for a first-year course in the Bachelor of Aviation (Pilot) at UniSA. Students interested in undertaking their flight training through the Graduate Diploma in Aviation at UniSA will be advised of attending an information session during the first semester of the study.

Aviation is something I’m very passionate about, and I have learnt first-hand that learning something and understanding concepts is much easier when it is something that intrigues and excites you.

Study Aviation as an external student

We welcome students from other schools to join us at the À¶ÔÂÁÁÁÏ and study Stage 2 Aviation as a single subject. Applications for studying Aviation externally in 2025 close on 27 September 2024.

Course details

SACE Stage 2 Scientific Studies – Aviation, 20 SACE credits

32 weekly sessions at the Australian Science & Mathematics School, Flinders University, Wednesdays from 1:40pm – 5pm.

Entry requirements

Students must be in Year 12 in the year of the course and have passing grades in Stage 1 Mathematics and Physics.

The sky’s the limit with an exciting career pathway in the aviation industry. There is a diverse range of career opportunities for qualified pilots including aerial photography, adventure tourism, agriculture, transport, emergency services, and defence.

Total cost

Costing for 2025 is still to be determined. It covers required materials and equipment. Nil for School Card Recipients. Additional Costs: Students can purchase textbooks (optional)
